Alex
What can shock most, a text or an image?
Alice
Image
Alex
Why?
Alice
Ask why, yep?
Um when I see, like, text, my, it takes a little while, just, maybe I'm dyslexic or something
umm
It just takes me a bit longer to think, but obviously, if it was like one big word that might be different
Alex
Like DEATH or BLOOD or something?
Do you think an image of a word could shock? What kind of word could shock?
Alice
An image of a word. Just a big bold word.
Alex
Like KILL?
Cause its almost like a picture isn't it, it's just one thing!
Sometimes yeah you read a story and it shocks you more than a picture
I'm going to include a quote here by J.M. Lo Duca from The Tears of Eros by Georges Bataille
"The image said everything in a compressed form, whereas words were only a tame reflection"
Alex
You make a lot of different work. How does it relate to itself?
Alice
People always say its quite random but to me its all the same really. i suppose i do think about all the different types of images that you see out and about in your life and I do put it all together as one big thing.
Alex
Art you trying to paint everything that you see?
Alice
I would like to be able to do that, aim to do that... a masterpiece.
Alex
What, like an encyclopaedia of everything?
Alice
i dont think my images are any good on their own... for me to have an image, whats really good i'd have to have everything together; ideally I'd have everything I'd ever done but all together to make one big masterpiece, in the end.
Alex
Do you think images can exist on their own? I mean is there a necessity for, i suppose for painters there is an idea of one painting defining...
Alice
I dont like the idea of having to explain it, at all, so what I really like, you know these crits we have where we dont talk, thats really nice I think, where you've just got what you can see in front of you so no text, no explanation. Thats quite good.
What do you mean by images on their own?
Alex
You're making it sound like an almost negative thing like you work isn't , each individual painting isn't ready to be looked at as a single piece whereas maybe its quite a positive thing and actually you are saying something about images by showing hundreds of images together. Cause painting is supposedly very perfect and authored and creative and each painting is different and everything and in a way you're kind of saying that one can only exist if its in this framework of all the other ones or something?
Alice
It also, I guess, helps if people understand it. Especially if you put things in order of when you did them, i think thats always nice. To show how you got to it. Umm everything in order helps you to understand a bit better. Maybe its because I'm so crap at reading and writing. I think I should maybe start at the beginning.
Alex
But you talk about backgrounds as well and that sounds like a beginning and an ending as well so you are doing the same thing with the single image as you want to do with all the images.
I've never realy thought about just backgrounds as a thing.
Its like what art is all about, like learning to do the ground etc
Alex
Thats all the tableau thing isn't it?
I cant remember the other questions. What was it?
Do you consider writing part of your primary practice?
Alice
Probably. i'm so unconfident about the writing but I'm quite determined to write really simply and factually. I dont want to go and write some big abstract thing when we have to do this big bit of writing. At the moment I'm just waiting to see what feedback I get. i know its important to articulate.
Alex
Have you ever used text in a painting?
Alice
No but do you know Rose Wylie. I'll show you, shes a painter. She's won loads of awards recently.
She loves that whole, like eugh, thing that I'm starting to hate, Outsider Art stuff.
Alex
You dont like it?
Alice
I'm starting to go off it cause I liked it so much starting to piss me off cause I can see that shes trying too hard
Alex Dipple
I dont know what that really is because if its exhibited in a gallery its not really outsider art, is it anymore?
Alice
She makes out that she is a bit of an outsider but she's not and its all really well planned so it does look clever, she's used text, very childish style painting the text onto canvases.
Alex
But its also like the Abstract Expressionist thing where they all thought they were geniuses or Gods or something, that kind of connects with outsider art.
Shall we turn this off now...?

Does a caption override an image?
Do you work out through making or thinking?
Can text be purely visual ?
